Video Game Re-Animates Lovecraft’s Herbert West: \”
\"8539C642-78F7-4E9B-A2BD-5F56F682963A.jpg\"In H.P. Lovecraft’s proto-zombie story ‘Herbert West – Reanimator’ the titular doctor uses a serum to whip reanimated corpses into frightening violence. In a new free game online, you get a chance to become West. Your mission: Bring the dead back to a semblance of life while making sure no one gets eaten.

In ‘Carrion Re-animating!’ you play Herbert West and have captured and killed several of the local townsfolk for your depraved experiments. But when the relatives of your victims show up on your doorstep looking for their lost loved ones, you need to quickly reanimate the corpses before they call the police. If you match the wrong zombie with the wrong relative, the relative is zombie chow. If you are too slow in getting them their zombie, the relative calls the cops. A moustached narrator tells West’s story from an armchair, adding a touch of Masterpiece Theater to Lovecraft’s world.

The game is available as a free download from Zombie Cow Studios and is sadly Windows-only.

Darwine: Mac Wine in New Bottles

LowEnd Mac discusses Virtualization technologies other than vmware or parallels… How about opensource Darwine?
Darwine: Mac Wine in New Bottles: \”Apple\’s move to Intel CPUs opened up a range of ways for Mac users to make use of Windows applications. Apple released Boot Camp, allowing Macs to dual-boot to Windows partitions in addition to Mac OS X. Parallels Desktop, VMware Fusion, and the free VirtualBox let users run virtualized Windows (or other PC operating systems) at the same time as OS X.
But if all you want to do is run a Windows application or two, do you really need to take the time (and the system resources) to boot to Windows – whether restarting entirely a la Boot Camp, or starting up Windows in a window a la one of the virtualizers?
Depending on the application you want to run, there may be another way.\”

Error (12): Link of previous volume failed for DVR Storage.

Ever just have one of those days….?

Error (12): Link of previous volume failed for DVR Storage.

Time Machine is a very reasonable backup package included with Mac OS 10.5, but every now and then there are some issues…  I changed out a drive (DVR Storage), with a larger SATA drive, and then I started receiving these errors…  According to the Apple Support Forums, this occurs if you don\’t clone the drive (eg. You just copy the files to the new drive).  I presume the \”.com.apple.timemachine.supported\” hidden file in the root of the drive maybe related to this issue…

But I have found a workaround / solution to the issue, assuming there is no critical backups contained on that drive.  Enter time machine, and select the drive in question, from the action pull down (the Gear Shaped icon in the Time Machine Browser), choose \”Delete All Backups of <drive name>\”.  Time Machine will ask for your administrator password, type it in, and wait a few minutes for Time Machine to purge the backups of that drive.

Once it is done, Time Machine will be able to backup the drive….

But I need to stress that this will purge all the backups of that drive\’s content.  So this is not something you will want to do if the old drive has backup data that you need to preserve… If there is critical backup data, instead use SuperDuper! to transfer the drives content to the new drive.
