What is your indicators for a technology being mainstream? Here\’s Webomatica\’s view of it…What’s Mainstream Technology? Ask Joe Average, The Spouse, Grandma, and Dave Letterman » Webomatica – Technology and Entertainment Digest
Interesting thought floating around whether these social aggregators like FriendFeed will ever go ‘mainstream.’ Of course, that begs the question – what is ‘mainstream,’ exactly?

With Time Warner starting to put bandwidth caps in place, the era of a internet based business model maybe in jeopardy. After all, I certainly am not going to use Go to My PC, or any of the Internet based backup companies now that I have to pay for the account, and then for the bandwidth to use them…
But, did you ever wonder if your ISP is throttling your Bittorrent traffic? Determine If Your ISP is Throttling Your BitTorrent Traffic Web application Glasnost simulates BitTorrent downloads on your computer to determine whether or not your internet service provider (ISP) is throttling your BitTorrent transfers. It does so by measuring the difference between your regular download speed and your BitTorrent download speed, testing against different ports and other variables to get a better idea of what exactly is being throttled. The tool is aggregating the results of the test, which the site is publishing to encourage greater transparency among ISPs. If your ISP turns out to be throttling your BitTorrent traffic, you can still avoid the throttling if you know the right tricks.\”
I know that the one drawback with iPhoto 2009 as been the inability to simply find pictures that have contain unidentified faces… So I was glad to see from this Mac OS X hints entry, that this process has been simplified…
Create an \’unnamed faces\’ Smart Album in iPhoto \’09 While iPhoto 09\’s new facial recognition is pretty good, it\’s not perfect. You can help it out by creating a Smart Album of unrecognized faces, and then using that to manually tag faces. With the release of iPhoto 8.0.2, Apple appears to have made this process much easier.
Create a Smart Album with the following criteria: Face — is — unnamed.
You can now tag faces in the photos in this Smart Album, and as long as there\’s at least one \’unnamed\’ face in the photo, it will remain in the Smart Album (negating the need for a second album, as explained in the first hint\’s comments. \”
“Services for Macintosh†is Microsoft name for their 3rd party implementation of the Apple File Protocol (AFP), and Printer Access Protocol (PAP). This was first utilized in Windows NT Server 4, and has been supported up to Windows 2003 Server…
The Services for Macintosh allowed Macintosh computers to access File Shares & use printers hosted on the Windows Server via AFP or PAP, which was native to Mac OS 7/8/9 (classic Mac OS). Mac OS X does not need AFP or PAP for File or Printer Sharing, but it is the default in the “Connect to Server†dialog.
For example:
AFP://my.fileserver.com would connect to my.fileserver.com via Apple file Protocol
SMB://my.fileserver.com would connect to my.fileserver.com via Samba (Windows native)
Overall, the only change that might need to be performed is that in the connect dialogs is to put “SMB†before the sharename in the connection dialog window. Overall, Apple has been slowly phasing out AppleTalk only features, and encorporating those features into newer protocols. For example, Bonjour gives TCP/IP many of the same features that Appletalk offered for Autodiscovery and Zero Configuration.
Folks,
Pop on over and grab the updated version of the Remote Log Viewer @Â Indigo Remote Log Viewer Homepage. New to this version of the application plugin are these features…Â And even better, we have not increased the cost of the product…Â It\’s still FREE.

Time Machine is generally a very valuable and useful tool, but like any tool when it breaks you need to be able to fix it. One issue that Time Machine doesn\’t seem to resolve well is it\’s lock files… I ran into a issue where my mother-in-laws system was reporting \”You do not have access privileges to save file \”.001ee2057899\”.
But of course, when I went to the Time Machine disk, I didn\’t see any file named \”.001ee2057899\”. Here\’s where I help anyone that has had this problem. The Finder is hiding the file. It\’s obvious in hindsight, but it\’s a DOT file. The finder has been programmed to hide any file that starts with a period/dot.

Note, the .001ff3584doc file. Now you can either open a terminal, and then CHMOD the ownership of the file. Or, instead I just deleted the file, and allowed Time Machine to recreate it.
Simply as pie. But I can\’t explain why WordPress died when I attempted to copy & paste the Terminal screen capture above. I was forced to substitute the PNG.
