Pointsec certificate expiring – may cause upgrade problems

We just ran into this problem with Pointsec as well….

Pointsec certificate expiring – may cause upgrade problems: \”This morning Checkpoint released a bulletin about a problem affecting Pointsec for PC version 6.2.0 (with HFA1 or HFA2) and 6.3.0. The certificate that the software uses to validate recovery files and log files has expired. As a result, recovery files and log files are not being updated anymore, and new installations of these software versions will fail.

It is also possible that you\’re going to see some error messages such as \’The installed license number is no longer valid\’ or \’-1\’

The good news is that your data is still secure. I talked to Checkpoint support and they assured me that you are still able to create recovery media based on the recovery files that have already been written. You can also use the crerec.exe (located in c:\\program files\\pointsec\\pointsec for pc) to force creation of a new recovery file. Checkpoint has hotfixes available if for some reason you\’re not able to upgrade, but this certificate expiration problem will not prevent you from upgrading if you choose to go that route.

Little Towns Consumed By Lava Flows and Crumbling Glaciers

Little Towns Consumed By Lava Flows and Crumbling Glaciers [Concept Art]: \”
\"\"Apocalypse has come to the village of Geldern in Germany. A street has crumbled to reveal steaming waters under lava-ridden rock. The artist who created this mega-illusion has destroyed other towns, too.
His name is Edgar Müller, and he\’s won so many street art contests that he bears the title \’master street artist.\’ Over the past two years, he\’s focused his attentions on creating large optical illusions on the streets and sidewalks of small towns. After creating one of these artworks, which take days even when he has several helpers, Müller likes to photograph people as they interact imaginatively with the optical illusion disasters.
\"\"
Back in 2007, a small town called Moose Jaw in Saskatchewan, Canada, was suddenly flooded, leaving only a few survivors clinging to a life raft (which I think has a tattered Canadian flag on it).
\"\"
And a few months ago, a town outside Dublin, Ireland called Dun Laoghaire watched as the ground was torn away to reveal glaciers from an ice age that might descend at any moment. I love watching the people balancing on the edges of the painting, dangling over frozen death.
You can see more of Edgar Müller\’s illusions of destruction on his website.

A SuperDuper! Review!

I personally use Time Machine for backing up at home.  With a single 500 Gb drive, I can backup virtually everything on my desktop system, except for the DVR collection…  Generally for months…
But, recently, I had an issue at work.  We have several Time Capsules that have had wireless failures, and needed to have the Time Machine backups copied off & placed on another hard drive.
But the Finder can\’t do this.  Disk Imaging via Disk Utility, might be able to…  But then I remembered that SuperDuper! from Shirt Pocket software offers this ability, and even advertises it.
The free version of SuperDuper! is almost everything that you would need.  It can perform complete backups, user file backups, Shared files only, or restores…  The advanced features require registration/payment.  They consist of Smart updates (differential/incremental backups), Copying newer files, and copying different files to the backup…
Overall, it was virtually painless in migrating the Time Machine backups to the new drive, and I highly recommend looking at SuperDuper! as a supplement to your Time Machine Backups…  And the price is right, the cost to register is only $27.95.

Making sense of Mac market share figures

Making sense of Mac market share figures: \”\"companion

Mac market share has been a hot topic ever since Apple staggered into (and subsequently crawled out of) the gutter in the mid-90s. It has been a slow but steady climb to the point where, as of late, Apple has set quarter after quarter of records when it comes to both Mac and iPod sales.

But, as even the casual Apple-watcher knows, there are many different metrics for measuring Mac market share these days, and they often don\’t match up. Browser stats, sales figures, notebooks versus desktops—it can all get a little muddy after a while. Here, we try to analyze these different statistics to get a bigger picture of what\’s really going on with the long-time underdog of the PC world.
