Slow Booting with Windows Vista?

There have been reports of slow boot ups when running Windows Vista…  But so far far, it appears to be a variety of issues…  One issue is the GPCLIENT service taking an long time to startup during boot up…

  1. Check your DNS settings on the Vista client, and make sure that the Fastest DNS server is first in the list.  You may want to add the OpenDNS DNS servers to your DNS list, to help diagnose a local DNS issue.
  2. Turning off auto-tuning on the Vista client may help.  From a command prompt, type:
netsh interface tcp set global rss=disabled
netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled
  3. Make sure that Vista SP 1 or later is installed on the system, and that the system is fully patched.
  4. If the previous did not work, then try the Performance Self-Tuning & Diagnsotics.  Open the Windows Menu, Control Panel, System Maintenance, Performance Information & Tools, Advanced Tools.  Choose Performance Self-Tuning & Diagnsotics.
  5. Consider setting the Network Card Speed & Duplex, instead of Auto-negotation.  That may help resolve the issue in some cases.

Worried about Free Disk Space?

Over at Macintouch, a user has contributed an Applescript that will display when the amount of freespace on the drive, drops below a preset limit.

tell application \'Finder\'
-- sets up variables
set theSize to capacity of startup disk -- total size of disk
set freeSpace to free space of startup disk -- amount of free space
-- changes size in bytes to size in MB and rounds it off
set theSize to round (theSize / (1028 * 1028))
set freeSpace to round (freeSpace / (1028 * 1028))
-- calculates the percentage of free disk space
set percentFree to round (freeSpace / theSize) * 100
if percentFree 10 then
display dialog \'You have less then 10% free disk space. Your computer will explode momentarily, so please run away now.\' buttons {\'Run!\'} with icon stop
else if percentFree 20 then
display dialog \'You have less then 20% free disk space. Your computer is preparing to explode, so please prepare to run away.\' buttons {\'Hmmm…\'} with icon caution
else if percentFree 30 then
display dialog \'You have less then 30% free disk space. Please tell someone about this as your computer is due to explode sometime in the near future.\' buttons {\'OK\'} with icon note
(*
else
display dialog \'You have \' & percentFree & \'% free space left. Keep working until I tell you to stop.\'
*)
end if
end tell

[…] Save the script somewhere, then save it again as an application rather than a script (making sure to uncheck all the options in the Save As dialog). All you have to do is make the application a startup item (in the Login Items tab of the Accounts section of the System Preferences). Every time the machine is started the app will run and warn you if you\’ve reached an appropriate level of \’explosiveness.\’ If you\’ve not reached any of the percentages, the user won\’t see anything at all.\”

SETI Picks Up Regular Laser Pulse Emanating From Space [Aliens]

Ragbir Bhathal works with SETI to scan the skies for possible communications from extraterrestrial intelligences. Unlike most SETI facilities, which look for radio signals, Bhathal\’s looks for laser pulses. And now he\’s found one.

Several years ago Bhathal, a researcher at the University of Western Sydney, suggested that a likely form of extraterrestrial communication would be laser bursts. He set up a facility at his lab which sweeps a nearby volume of space, within about 100 light years, for laser bursts that come in a regular pattern. Any kind of communication would likely be distinguished from background noise by coming in repeated or non-random patterns.

And a few months ago, Bhathal found the kind of regular pattern he\’s been looking for. He\’s been analyzing it and seeking a repeat pattern in the same area of space ever since. Though he\’s cautious about claiming it as a genuine extraterrestrial signal, his discovery has been making local news. Read all about it in The Australian.

Is Sci-Fi TV Too Scary For British Kids? [Scared Children Of Blighty]

The survey of 3000 UK parents, carried out by website TheBabyWebsite.com, happily blamed television for children\’s bad dreams:

All children suffer from nightmares at some point during childhood. But there is no doubt that viewing unnecessary violence and hostility on television contributes to this.

Doctor Who, in particular, was singled out for being \’too dark and sinister for under seven-year-olds,\’ with the majority of those polled wanting it to be pushed to a later, less kid-friendly timeslot.
Excuse me… Who here thinks that Doctor Who is a Television show for those under 7? I\’m sorry, I know that I was watching Doctor Who 25+ years ago, when I was somewhere in the 8 – 10 range…
But I would never consider letting my 5 year old watch it. Heck, she had some issues with WALL-E…. The introduction of EVE was just a little too violent for her, but once that settled down, she was fine…
Would I let her watch Doctor Who? Only if I pre-watched the episode or movie, and she was sitting with us. Doctor Who isn\’t something for young kids (under 7 or 8) to be watching by themselves, without some adult supervision…

Six Countries Unite to Make Live-Action, English Bubblegum Crisis Movie [Bubblegum Crisis]

I just had to post this, since the original BGC [BGC 2032/2033] is one of my favorite series…
But evidently Japan, The UK, Australia, Singapore, Canada, and China are all potentially enabling the BGC Live Action movie to finally move forward…
According to Hollywood Reporter:
The contract will make use of the Singapore-Australia, Australia-Canada, Canada-Singapore, China-Australia and China-Canada co-production treaties, potentially enabling the film to tap into soft money from the national governments and also qualify for mainland China release . . . Director and cast have yet to be decided. The spokesman said that \’Crisis\’ will feature two male leads and a quartet of female action babes — two Caucasian and two Asian.
