Truth in Caller ID Act of 2010 makes Caller ID spoofing a crime

Caller ID spoofers, your days are numbered! The \’Truth in Caller ID Act of 2010\’ has just passed the House. The bill — which has been kickin\’ around in one form or another since 2007, and which only passed the Senate as recently as this February — makes it illegal \’to cause any caller ID service to transmit misleading or inaccurate caller ID information.\’ As Ars Technica points out, there are some exceptions, including blocking your own outgoing caller ID info, and law enforcement is exempt. This bad boy is aimed at any and all real-time voice service, \’regardless of the technology or network utilized,\’ ensuring that VoIP is included. Look for the punitive measures (including flogging) to kick in about six months from now.

Fine Tune Volume Adjustment in OS X by Holding Alt+Shift [Shortcuts]

If you use a Mac, chances are you regularly adjust the volume using your keyboard\’s volume keys. They\’re handy enough, but the volume increment is pretty large.
There are at least two hidden options that people are not often aware of.
1) Fine tune volume in OS X by holding down Alt(Option)+Shift then pressing the volume adjuster buttons. Also if you hit the volume down button till it shows the mute sign then hit the mute key it will play very quietly.
2) Shift+ Volume Adjusters allows you change the volume setting, without playing the \”tweet\” sound. This way you can lower the volume, without anyone realizing it…
3) Option – Hitting Option + Volume Adjusters will bring up the sound control panel, without having to have System Preferences startup & switching to it.

SFX interviews Mark Gatiss On Daleks (Victory of the Daleks)

SFX: The Daleks and World War II is a pretty splendid combination. Was that actually your pitch or was it something that Steven requested?
Mark Gatiss: “Steven simply said ‘Churchill vs the Daleks!’ And that’s one of those pitches that you want to be given. It’s not like ‘Picnic with a man’! It’s very exciting. And it came directly out of Steven taking his kids to the Cabinet War Rooms – they were absolutely spellbound by it. So that’s the setting. I was initially intimidated by the thought of doing the Daleks after all these years but then I suppose I’ve always had an idea of what I’d like to do with them. They are, weirdly, an inherently World War II feeling creature. The Nazi connection is there, and also the world of the early ’60s is very heavily post-War – they feel like they belong to it. There’s a nice match to it.”

Hong Kong Broadband: 1/1Gbps for $26/Month — 100/100Mbps for $13/Month

They (the Broadband providers) keep saying that we are getting the best service ever, but next time you pay your broadband bill, consider what you are getting for your money.

Then consider Hong Kong residents can now buy 1,000Mbps symmetrical broadband service for $26 per month.  Symmetrical broadband offers identical upstream and downstream speeds, so transferring large files back and forth becomes an afterthought, not a nuisance.

This week Hong Kong Broadband Network (HKBN) introduced wide availability of its mega-fast 1/1 gigabit per second service at prices that most American broadband providers won’t match for slow ‘lite’ or ‘budget’ tiers.  The new gigabit service joins an even more affordable 100/100Mbps broadband service HKBN sells for $13 a month.

‘Symmetric 1 Gbps broadband at US$26/month (HK$199) is a global breakthrough service, and is by far the best value in terms of cost per Mbps in Hong Kong. We are pleased to contribute towards making Hong Kong a global Fibre Oasis,’ said June Lam, Associate Director, Marketing, HKBN.

Internet abuzz with BitTorrent bypass code

Draconian UK law gets SeedF**cked
A block of 86 lines of C# code is creating a buzz online following claims it may make BitTorrent downloads untraceable.
The code, sweetly named SeedF*cker, is actually an exploit discovered last November that would allow a BitTorent user to fake the IP address of a server from where a file could be downloaded. It could also be used to flood a BitTorrent with dozens of fake peers. The sudden interest in the exploit follows measures in a new UK law, passed last week, where ISPs may be obliged to provide IP addresses to the authorities of files that are said to be infringing copyright.

Syfy Picks Up Even More Wrestling, Moves Its Friday Night Programming To Tuesdays [Syfy]

The good news is: Syfy\’s no longer condemning its strongest programs to the Friday night death slot of death. The bad news is: the move comes because Syfy is picking up World Wrestling Entertainment\’s hit program Friday Night Smackdown. As The Hollywood Reporter puts it somewhat drily, \’It\’s just the network\’s latest step away from its sci-fi roots.\’

Road Film (With Fighting)

Now Eyrie Productions (http://www.eyrie.net) has a mixed track record regarding their Fan Fiction.  Often, it\’s good, but they do so often cross the line into Mary Sue-isms with their characters.
That isn\’t necessarily bad, but it\’s not great.  After all, Ensign Newbie shouldn\’t be able to take over from Captain Kirk, at least not within the first chapter.. But sometimes that\’s just what you want to read….
They just put out a Top Gear fan fiction…  Yes, the BBC Car show, now has a fan fiction based on it…
And you know what, it\’s pretty darn good…  Sure it\’s in script form, but that works, after all they are writing about a TV show, and it just works..

Hammond: I just love that your car\’s satnav system knows where all the military bases are.
May: It\’s Klingon. These things are important to them.
Ext. Day. Coast Road. The two cars make good time, their drivers having thrown all regard for the traffic laws to the wind.
Hammond (VO): This was actually a fair test of our cars\’ capabilities in a genuine crisis situation. The Lamborghini was fast, agile, with superior roadholding qualities; the bigger, heavier KMW was actually a little bit faster, and its build quality gave it a very reassuring sense of indestructibility. And the Aztech was broken and useless.
The cars round a corner. In the distance a group of EARTHFORCE MARINES can be seen setting up a portable roadblock.
Int. Day. Lamborghini cabin. CLARKSON looks aghast.
Clarkson: Uh-oh. Guys?
Int. Day. KMW cabin. MAY sets his jaw.
May: Tuck in behind me. Whatever happens, don\’t stop.
He puts his foot down. HAMMOND blinks at him in astonishment.
Int. Day. KMW cabin. HAMMOND hides behind the dash, occasionally glancing at MAY as if he thinks he\'s gone insane.
May: (shouting in Klingon)
Subtitle: Honorless dogs! Make way for Captain Slow!

Ext. Day. Coast Road. The LAMBO slides into a tight trailing formation behind the KMW, which is accelerating toward the roadblock. A MARINE holds up his hand for the KMW to halt, but is ignored.
Int. Day. KMW cabin. MAY, a furious scowl on his face, drives straight toward the roadblock -
Ext. Day. Coast Road. - ignoring the flurry of ill-aimed blasterfire this draws, and smashes it down with the KMW\'s bumper.
